- Today’s WJ prompt: What personal application can you make with the short story “The Scarlet Ibis”? Please be specific and detailed.
- LT: tone and mood
- Tone: the author’s implicit attitude toward the people, places, and events in a story.
When we speak, tone is conveyed by our voice inflections, our wink of an eye, or some other gesture. A teacher who says, “You’re going to fail the next exam” may be indicating concern, frustration, sympathy, alarm, humor, or indifference, depending on the tone of voice. In a literary work that spoken voice is unavailable; instead we must rely on the context in which a statement appears to interpret it correctly.
- Tone is often created by the denotative & connotative meaning, context, sentence structure, and punctuation.
- Mood is the emotional response evoked in the reader; the feeling that a piece of literature creates in the reader.
- Tone and mood analysis in Hurst's story:
- Read and then identify the tone and mood in the first paragraph in Hurst’s story.
- Closely examine the tone. (Pay attention to the context and word choice.)
- What is the tone?
- How is the tone achieved?
- What mood is created by the tone?
